Extended Washing Cycle

Last time I was using a washing machine in a farm, it delayed multiple times, probably down to the low water pressure.

Then my own washing machine played up, it took 3 hours before it would finish, despite having trying to stop it.  This time was probably down to overloading.

The washing machines are too smart.

Rebus Principle

In the BBC Secret History of Writing, it reminded us that we spoke much longer than we wrote.  And when we invented writing, we did not invent a symbol for everything, so we borrowed what we had invented, and some has evolved into Sarabit, Alphabet and Hiragana.  So any anomaly of any any languages, we can just pin them all on this Rebus Principle.

Giant Wotsits

Influenced by the advertisement, I bought a bag of giant wotsits.  It really isn't that big...

Suzuki SV650

The long await test ride was met with disappointment.  The SV650 has a very low bar Z650 to beat, and still fail. Z650 was adequate, and SV650 was basic...  The only nice things I can say about the SV650 is that it is a motorcycle and it moves.

Nagomi Black Sesame Ice Cream

I just swooped up loads of ice-cream whilst I was in the supermarket, one of which is this Nagomi Black Sesame Ice Cream.

It is very airy, ice-creamy, insufficently seasamey.

Suzuki Katana

For the sake of curiosity, I test rode the Katana.  Katana is quite ugly, but when you are riding it, you are not looking at it.  Katana's specification matches up with Speed Triple very well.  It is powerful, turns on a dime, I have very few complains apart from its look.  It has all the potential for to be a hooligan bike.

RIP Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Ruth Bader Ginsburg has impacted all our lives rather you know it or not. As a Supreme Court Justice, she has moved and modernised American laws and beyond.

World is sufficiently sad and depressing, let's remember her with laughter.

Windermere Standup Paddleboarding

I have been meaning to try standup paddleboarding. Having learnt kayak and canoe, this shouldn't be a problem. I signed up with Leeds council at Yeadon but was cancelled by Covid. I found Lake District Paddleboarding, so I went for it.

The initial forecast was good, so I didn't bother hiring wet suit. Then the forecast changed to rainy; in grand scheme of thing, it is no big detriment to the water sport experience. Actually the weather was very good after some rain at the beginning.

I was so confident that I wasn't going to fall in, but I did.

It was meant to be a river safari, but it rained the night before and the river was very fast, so we had to turn around.  I am glad I ticked it off.

Easier to fall off, going shorter distance, I am not seeing the appeal of SUP, I probably wouldn't bother again.

Country Life

Our little trip was based in a farm cottage, and we were surrounded by wild lives and farm activities.  I never thought I would see a real life sheep herding.

Also, we saw an owl and a few voles in real life. After a whole week, I was just about to tell the tits apart.

Hebden Suspension Bridge

In a high traffic Dales Way, there is a Hebden Suspension Bridge.  The bridge is both longer and wobblier than I expected.

Linton Falls on Wharfe

We were hoping to see a fall in Burnsall, as indicated on the OS map, we had to trek thorough a field with a bull warning sign to not see a fall nor a trickle.

We got closer and closer to where the map indicated, we still haven't seen it, we worried if Linton Falls actually exists, or visible, like the Clough Force.

We finally saw the falls, and it did not disappoint.  Especially it has been raining, and a floodgate was open just upstream.

Aisgill Moor Train Spotting

We knew the Dalesman was travelling in the area, so we parked up with a small picnic on Aisgill Moor / Bridge.  We were quite early, but there were already a few cars.

As the evening rolls on, there were more and more people joining us.

And additionally, we also spotted another two trains.

It was gone 6pm, and we were getting hungry, and the Dalesman finally came.

Clough Force on Clough

Clough Force was starred on the OS map, and since it was near us, we went for a walk.  We followed the path on the OS map and we could only see the Clough Force from above, afar.  The ravine was inaccessible or not signed.  If it is inaccessible, why did it deserve a star on the map?  Additionally, the path was marshy and has bulls, for what we managed to see, it was not really worth the risks.

Snaizeholme Red Squirrel Trail

As we drove in the area, we saw loads of red squirrel signs. So we look into it, there is a Red Squirrel Trail in the area. Additionally, we saw our first English red squirrel helping itself with the bird feeder peanuts, we then believed the red squirrel sign was not just a plot to get people to drive slower.
The red squirrel outside the cottage fattened up with the bird feeder peanuts.

I was not convinced we would be seeing red squirrels in the wild, not knowing their active hours, etc.  At least we managed to get parked on a cloudy day.
The red squirrel trail is in the pine area.
Soon after the start of the trail, I even snapped one amongst the pine.
But this is the real reason why the squirrels gather!

As soon as you are out of the pine area, you are back onto the typical sheepy marshy land.

When I got home to look at all the close up picture of the squirrels, none of their ears are tufted! Missold! I suspect it is a cold weather hair. If I see them again in Winter, I will check again.

Stock Ghyll Force on Stock Ghyll

On our way to standup paddleboarding, we explored Ambleside a little by visiting Stock Ghyll Force.  Apparently it is only of the best kept secret of Ambleside as Sarah had never been all the times they stayed at Ambleside.  The falls has a few tiers making the walk entertaining.

Monday 14 September 2020

Cotter Force on Cotterdale

Cotter Force is just off the main road, a few good size laybys for parking, nicely paved path for an easy stroll, and the fall itself is not bad.

Sunday 13 September 2020

Cautley Spout on Cautley Holme

Cautley Spout looks very impressive on all the photos, with a challenging hike to match.   To be fair, you can see Cautley Spout not far from the main road, if you just want a photo, you could take one and claim to have been there.

The view before the ascent.

Since the fall is so high, you see different section of the fall as you ascent. At the same time, the path condition gets worst as you go up, and valley breeze gets stronger.

Saturday 12 September 2020

Catrake Force on Swale

Catrake Force was fifth and last falls in our Keld waterfalls ramble.  It is shown prominently on the OS map, but it is tucked away at the bottom of a campsite.  The river is also "inaccessible".

Friday 11 September 2020

Kidson Force on Swale

Kidson Force was the fourth falls on our Keld waterfalls ramble.  OS map seem to indicate it incorrectly, we and a few others have ended up on top of East Gill and overlooking Kidson.  We can see a big group of people with swimming gear hiked down to the force.  Undeterred, we hike around to see Kidson.

The sign only say Kidson Upper Force, when we got there, we understand.  The path to the upper force was already difficult,  the unofficial path to lower force was very treacherous, I am glad I made it.

Upper falls without a scale looks fairly small.
Both falls in scale.
Lower Force in scale.

Thursday 10 September 2020

East Gill Force on East Gill?

East Gill Force, was not named on the OS map,  was our third falls in our Keld waterfalls ramble. I cannot seem to find any names for the beck feeding East Gill on either OS or Google.  It is only short walk from Keld Centre.

The falls are very impressive.

Prematured Garlic

One of the garlic has a weak stem, so after trying to support it a few times, I decided to end its misery knowing it is not fully matured yet.

It definitely smells of garlic, the structure is starting to form. It tasted interesting... I am looking forward to the other garlic.
